Home insurance: are you comparing what really matters?

Didier
02/11/2026

You compare your internet subscription, your energy contract or the price of a flight. But what about your home insurance? This is also the message of the Belgian Federal Public Service Economy in its “Dare to compare” campaign: a contract that was suitable a few years ago may no longer match your current situation.

When comparing insurance, price is important. But price is not the only factor.

Price does not tell the full story

Two home insurance policies can have a similar price but provide different levels of protection. When comparing policies, check at least these four elements:

- Price — how much do you pay?

- Cover — which risks, people and belongings are covered?

- Exclusions — in which situations does the insurance not provide cover?

- Excess — how much may remain payable by you after a covered claim?

A cheaper insurance policy can be the right choice. But price alone is not enough to make that decision.

Has your situation changed?

Your insurance should reflect your current situation. Since you first took out your policy, you may have moved, started living with a partner, joined a shared house or bought new belongings. After a separation, you may have moved into a new home and your children may now live at two different addresses.

These changes are good reasons to review your insurance. This does not automatically mean that you should change insurer.

It simply means checking whether your current policy still matches your needs.

Five questions to ask before choosing

Before taking out or comparing home insurance, ask yourself:

  1. Who needs to be insured?
  2. Which belongings do you want to protect?
  3. Which events are covered?
  4. What are the main exclusions and excesses?
  5. How much do you pay for this protection?

Price comes last for a reason.

It is difficult to know whether an insurance policy offers good value if you do not first understand what it covers.

A broker can help you compare

Insurance policies are not always easy to compare. An insurance broker can help you identify your needs, understand the differences between policies and compare the solutions available through the broker.

A broker will also explain important elements such as cover, exclusions, excesses and the consequences of a change in your personal situation.

Dare to compare

Comparing insurance does not necessarily mean changing insurer. You may compare different options and conclude that your current policy is still suitable.

That is also a useful result. At SWINZ, we believe that insurance should be easy to understand, adapted to your situation and simple to use.

So yes, compare.

But above all, compare what really matters for you.

Important information: cover, exclusions, excesses, limits and conditions vary between insurance policies. Always read the pre-contractual and contractual documents before taking out insurance.
